A Ridiculous Video

We're re-vamping our website, and one of the things that we're doing is recording a "welcome" video for those that are new and don't know what to expect on a Sunday morning. This is NOT it. Watch Will's face . . . makes me laugh every time.//www.youtube.com/get_player

What I said this morning . . .

We, as the christian church (not so much at Oak Mountain, but certainly elsewhere) spend SO much time and energy and dialogue about what is and isn't appropriate in worship; hymns vs praise songs, choruses, repeats, thee's, thou's, stanzas, what we should sing, what we shouldn't sing, when it was written . . . .I think we SOMETIMES forget that worship is in the presence of the living lord and savior - Jesus. He's there. He's with us, in the room. The ironic thing is - one of the only pictures that we're given in scripture of what worship may look…

Choir resumes . . .

Choir kicks back off tomorrow with normal Wednesday rehearsals. If you've never been to choir, ever - please come. You don't have to know how to read music. We provide snacks and drinks, and childcare should you need it. Don't feel like a commitment to choir at Oak Mountain means you have to be there every Wednesday night! You know that lady that sits by the door and checks your name off on a role as you walk in - she doesn't come to this choir.Don't feel like showing up at 6:30 would be a waste of your time. The…

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Finishing up plans for Christmas. Our Spectacular Spectacular is going to be the morning of December 13 - both services. We start rehearsing on September 16. I start charting next week. And I can already tell it's going to be one of those services, that is WAY out of my control.I was sifting through music (my iTunes library has over 16,000 tunes in it . . . ) and a friend walked in today, and let me hear a song, not knowing that I was planning Christmas, and WHAMMO . . . there it was. I continue to be amazed at…

This weekend . . .

This weekend Mandy and Drake and I are up in the mountains with the singles' group from Oak Mountain. We've been leading worship, and I taught a little bit last night. Great group of folks.Yesterday, Mandy and Drake and I loaded up in the truck and drove to this place in the middle of nowhere with a weird banjo player, and rented some tubes to go tubing down this river. Easy trip. Very relaxing. Much fun. Mandy and I stayed close through the 2 mile journey down the river, most of the time having our tubes locked via my feet.…

Monday morning recap for Sunday – May 17

Yesterday's sermon focus was on the 2nd -3rd of our new mission statement "To Exalt Christ by equipping every member to seek grace from God, share grace in community, and show grace to all."Our Youth Choir opened the service with Lifesong. Let me say this - There's too many kids that want to be musicians that aren't participating in the things that make you into a musician. When I was 16, I wanted to be just like Elton John or Billy Joel . . . but I was marching in the band, singing in the choir, playing bass in the…

Monday morning recap for Sunday – May 3rd

Yesterday was our 20th Anniversary Celebration. Great morning of worship. We had Rev. Barker in attendance and he offered up our pastoral prayer. Also showed a 13 minute video highlighting the founding of the church as well as the impact of the church through some testimonies. We will post it as soon as we "can."We opened with Awesome is the Lord Most HighAfter our call to worship, we sang Sing to the King, Not to Us, and the Solid Rock. We followed that with Immortal Invisible, Everlasting God (the Brenton Brown version, NOT the harder-to-sing Lincoln Brewster version), and I…

Perspective . . .

Mars Hill - Seattle keeps a blog that I read. Mark Driscoll puts his sermon outlines on the web every once in a while.I loved this point:2. Worship God Because Glory is Coming (1 Pet. 4:13)For Christians: this life is the closest you will ever get to hell. For unbelievers: this life is the closest you will ever get to heaven. This life and its troubles will pale in light of eternity.

Easter Sunday Recap for Oak Mountain

We had a great Sunday at Oak Mountain. The thought that I've had preceding yesterday was this: What if we had the same fervor and zeal about Christ's resurrection the other 51 Sundays of the year! Facebook and Twitter were inundated with "Christ is risen!" messages, which are great - and He is - but He has been for close to 2000 years - our message shouldn't dramatically increase with Easter Sunday - it should be that exciting, that life-changing every Sunday, or thursday afternoon, or Tuesday at 9:15PM . . . And scene.Yesterday we opened with Let God Arise…
